A sense of place
Let the coastline set the pace.
On Campania’s southern shore, the Amalfi Coast is a chain of small settlements between steep slopes and the sea. Terraced gardens, dramatic topography, and historic towns are part of the landscape recognized by UNESCO. The same geography makes short distances feel slower: pick a base, choose one or two places to reach each day, and leave room for the return journey.
Amalfi is a practical first base for nearby villages; Salerno can work well if your route arrives by train. Ferries and buses connect the coast, while the narrow SS 163 road can be busy. Local visitor information recommends considering alternatives to driving where they suit your plans. Read the current arrival guidance from Visit Amalfi before choosing a route.
Choose your pace
Three ways to begin.
01 / 3 DAYSOne town, a first look
Settle in Amalfi and explore the center on arrival day. Use one full day for a nearby village reached by ferry or bus, checking the return connection before you go. Keep the last day open for a swim, a longer lunch, or an easy local outing.
02 / 5 DAYSFollow the water
Make Amalfi your base, then spread visits to Atrani, Maiori, Minori, or Positano across separate days. Ferries can make coastal hops scenic when services line up; use the current timetable, and keep a quieter day near your base between longer outings.
03 / 7 DAYSCoast and a city stop
Give the coast several slower days, with time for Amalfi and a few neighboring towns. Add Salerno at the start or end if it fits your train journey; use the final day as a connection buffer rather than planning a tight transfer.
These are flexible editorial trip ideas, not fixed schedules. Choose outings around the season, your mobility needs, and the services running on your dates.
Practical notes
Arrive, then travel lightly.
Coming from Naples
Visit Amalfi outlines a route from Naples Central station to Salerno by train, followed by a bus or ferry to Amalfi. If you land in Naples, check the airport-to-station leg and the onward connection against your arrival time before booking.
Coming from Salerno
From Salerno, compare the ferry from Concordia pier with SITA Sud buses from the station. The local visitor board also lists links from Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport. Check service dates and the last departure before settling on a connection.
Between villages
Travelmar ferries and SITA Sud buses serve coastal stops, including the Amalfi–Maiori–Salerno route. Compare the operators’ current schedules on the day you plan to travel; seasonal timetables and service notices can change.
If you are driving
Amalfi’s historic center has restricted vehicle access, and the municipality publishes date-specific traffic measures for the coastal road. Read the current rules before setting off, including any permit or arrival exceptions that may apply to your stay.
Plan for the terrain
Access is route by route.
Hillside streets, stairways, and changes in elevation are part of the coast. A short map distance may involve steps or a steep walk; the local visitor board’s Amalfi–Atrani walk, for example, includes stairs. If step-free access matters, ask your accommodation about the full path from the nearest ferry or bus stop, not just the room itself. Confirm boarding, luggage, and assistance directly with each transport operator.
Amalfi’s visitor board lists public elevators serving a few specific uphill connections. They are not a coast-wide step-free network, so check current operating details and whether an elevator serves your route. The historic-center pedestrian rules describe a limited vehicle exception for services supporting disabled people with the required markings; verify the current criteria with the municipality before travel.
